What Are Damon® Braces?
Damon braces are an advanced version of traditional brackets. The primary difference is that the bracket does not need an O-ring elastic or ligature to attach to the archwire. Damon braces work much like traditional braces, but they are self-ligating.
The brackets slide freely on the archwire as the orthodontist adjusts it. The teeth can move fluidly, and orthodontic treatment may be faster and more comfortable.
Benefits of Damon Braces
Here are several ways that Damon braces can make a difference in your treatment:
- Broadening Your Smile. Dr. Palermo uses cutting edge archwires to slowly broaden and remodel the alveolar bones, which house the teeth. This prevents the need to extract permanent teeth, increased the width of the oral cavity for airway purposes and resulting in a broader, more esthetic smile!
- Less Time at the Orthodontist. Orthodontists don't have to spend time applying new O-rings at each appointment, making visits fewer and more efficient for their patients.
- Less Painful Treatment. With traditional braces, the orthodontist tightens the system at each appointment, which can result in discomfort and even pain. Since the forces used in Damon® braces are lighter over longer amounts of time between visits, the process is generally much more comfortable.
- Easier to Clean. Damon® brackets do not have O-rings, so they don't collect as much plaque and food debris as traditional braces. The patient will have an easier time keeping their braces clean, leaving them at less risk of white-spot lesions and gum disease.
- Gentler on the Mouth. Patients with traditional braces sometimes have problems with the brackets hurting the inside of their lips and cheeks. Damon® braces are not as tall as traditional brackets. They are smoother to the touch, so they cause fewer problems.
- Clear Brackets Available. You can get clear brackets with the Damon® system, making braces far less visible on the teeth. Clear brackets enable teen and adult patients to show more of their natural smiles.
Are You a Good Candidate for Damon® Braces?
If you've been unhappy with your smile, you know how it can affect your personal and professional life. Patients who need to upgrade their smiles for cosmetic or medical reasons should talk to an orthodontist about getting treatment.
Anyone interested in traditional braces should think about getting Damon® brackets. The system works similarly but is smoother, quicker, and less painful than traditional braces.
